Diffusion

Diffusion is the movement of particles in a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. In simpler terms it means that the particles move from an area where there is a lot of that type of particle to an area where there is not much at all. When particles move this way, they are said to diffuse. Diffusion takes place in liquids and gases where the particles have enough energy to move around freely. 

Examples :-

After eating, there is high concentration of glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol in small intestine. In the bloodstream, there are low concentration of these molecules.Most of the molecules move by diffusion from the small intestine, through cell membranes and into the blood capillaries in the villi.

The flow of blood in the capillaries quickly carries the digested material away, so there is always a higher concentration in the small intestine and lower concentration in the blood. Hence, diffusion continues.

When gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen accumulate inside the cell, their concentration is greater inside compared to the external environment. Due to this difference in concentrations, their net movement is to the outside by diffuse, i.e., from their region of higher concentration to lower concentration.

·Similarly, when the concentration is greater outside, O_2 and CO_2   move inside the cell from the external environment following the principle of diffusion. In unicellular organisms, transport of gases by diffusion occurs all over the cell membrane, e.g., Chlamydomonas, Paramecium, Amoeba, etc.
